Next Steps

Finally, Valentine’s Day is here and perhaps Mr. Muthalik is wondering what to do with the pink chaddis sent to him by some self-declared custodians of progressive India, but we are sure that these self-declared custodians know for sure what to do with the pink condoms we sent to them. We wish them a safe, snobbish, and secular Valentine’s Day.

Well, so what are we doing on this day? Those amongst us, who have girlfriends or wives will pamper them, and those who don’t, will blog like me :)

But as we told, our campaign doesn’t end with Valentine’s Day. It’s just a beginning, and we had a good beginning. Thousands of people visited this page and supported us, some people visited this page to abuse us and Hinduism, that’s their culture and they have every right to practice that, we promised not to moderate, and one can still see those abusive messages lying in the ‘comments’.

So what do we do next?

Let me first confess that the pink condom campaign was just a tool to get noticed in the media and the virtual world - to mobilize people, to bring together like minded Hindus on a common platform, to be a voice of modern age Hinduism.

No media house would have supported a “consortium of assertive and proud Hindus who are sick of Indian sickulars conspiring to attribute every vice in the society to Hinduism”; anyone speaking appreciatively about Hinduism is termed ‘communal’ in today’s world. Everyone is working overtime to defeat the communal forces and win a ticket to progressiveness.

That’s why Indian media was more than happy to help a group, which placed a pink underwear over a background associated with the sacred Hindu sign of Om. This group, calling itself a “consortium of pubgoing, loose and forward women”, further derided RSS by putting pictures of a man and small kid attending RSS shakhas (at least keep little children out of this politics).

A group that could mock the Hindu sacred sign and wrongly blame RSS for Mangalore put attack (when RSS has decried the attack and even favored ban on the attackers) was a sure-shot secular and progressive group in today’s world, and the Indian media obliged them no end.

If this group had so many chaddis to spare, I wish they had sent some of it to thousands of Indians who have no piece of cloth to cover themselves (yes, I don’t find chaddis offensive, they are a very useful part of the wardrobe). But those poor, naked, dirty and backward Indians don’t speak English or go to pub, so they sent chaddis to Muthalik, I hope Muthalik sends them to those poor souls, but even he won’t I know.

But it was not about chaddis. It was not even for liberty and women rights. It was all about proving oneself morally superior. Send a pink chaddi and prove yourself forward and progressive. The whole campaign was steeping with a condescending attitude.

Let me make it clear once again – what SRS did in the Mangalore pub was not only uncivil and uncouth, it was criminal. If any campaign was needed, it was needed to bring those guys to book. The pink chaddi campaign brought those guys to television studios and news paper columns.

Anyway, let the pink chaddi guys feel satisfied that their job is done. Our job starts now.

First of all, I’m changing the name of our group from “The Pink Condom Campaign” to “The Self-respecting Hindus' Initiative for Equality and Liberty with Dignity” or “The SHIELD”.

The name has been changed on facebook community too, which could start as our initial platform for discussions and future course of actions.

We should invite likeminded friends to join, who otherwise didn’t join earlier as they thought pinkchaddi was too small an issue to start a counter campaign, and they were right, but as I told earlier, it was just an excuse to catch eyeballs and unite.

So what do we do next?

Our movement/campaign/initiative starts now. It would not be led by one group or any Sangh Parivar organization. It will be championed by you – an ordinary self-respecting Hindu.

Let’s act as a SHIELD against people attacking Hinduism and blaming it for everything wrong that goes around in our society.

Let’s act as a SHIELD against people like Sri Ram Sene, who have hijacked name of Hindu culture to do get some free publicity.

Let’s act as a SHIELD against vices that truly infect Hindu society such as casteism, gender inequality, lack of brotherhood, and ignorance about richness of Hindu culture.

Let’s also act as a SHIELD against other vices that infect our society such as corruption and crime, because if we don’t do that, the sickulars will blame even those on Hinduism!

Let’s unite and act as a SHIELD to protect our self-respect and self-esteem, something that has been under constant attack but has survived for centuries. But we can’t just bloat under the fact that if it has survived all kinds of attacks, it will survive even in future. Hindusim is all about Karma philosophy, and we have to act.

Let’s spread the word, discuss issues, try to meet in different cities in person, and let the movement start.

  2. with a free mind, tell me which one of these protests do you think is befitting?

    1. Loose, pubgoing & forward women sending chaddi to Sene goons
    2. Certain men sending condoms to the forward women.

All these are really 'loose' people in someway and most of us are enjoying these 'movements', but somehow I feel the condom champain seems befitting:-) even though it is still catching up.

  4. A joke from chaddi blog, pasting here as it is:

    Overheard in an office:
one: Did you notice that, the lady sitting beside you seems like not wearing any panties today!!!!?????

Another: Wont i notice that? You know she is a loose, pubgoing 'forward' woman who had sent her lone panty to Ram sene... I thank those who ever had come up with this idea of sending panties :-). I will enjoy this every day:-)

We need to clean the corruption in our country. So Mr. Police, Mr. Judge, if you are corrupt, we will spare no condoms or chaddis to expose you. This is a direct warning to all corrupt people and mafia.

Action plan begins. Now the time to clean our countries hijacked policies.

  9. you know, I read your blog with an open mind. interesting arguments, was trying to figure the real intent behind the pink condoms till i saw what you wrote under 'post a comment'. it says 'i know some of you would be abusive, because thats the only language you have for hindus but go ahead anyway.'

such comments distance all hopes of a genuine dialgoue, perhaps even reaching a common platform where chuddies, condoms and whatever else share a vision. i think it would help if you guys too stopped being judgemental, and dropped the ego battle.
if your agenda is to have a genuine, open minded discussion, i'm up for it. and it would help if we all kept our egos and minor irritations aside. i do beleive Hinduism also teaches us not to judge others, like arjun didnt hate his cousins, he just did what was expected of him. Ram too, and thats what makes them role models, irrespective of this divine credentials. so why not start from here? and stop pulling others down? it doesnt add to our strength, only increases negative vibes.

  10. Well, it all seems little funny to me. Pink chaddi is the stupidest thing. Guess what even more stupidest media gave it so much coverage. It all seems pathetic.
I have nothing against pink chaddi ( though I cant understand their loose minds ) and pink condom too. I have big fight against media, there are thousands of horrible things happening every single minute against woman - but problem is these woman are poor, they cant speak english and they cant derogate a particular society. Hencce there is no coverage about these. Any small injustice met to a english speaking woman (who can't show her face and fight those insane folks coz everyone will know that she had gone to pub) who can highlight, by adding drama to it suddenly becocmes a breaking news. I find it's the abject unprofessinalism, that is ruling media.

Can you please send some pink condom to maya sharmas - barka dutts - and all those horrible folks of Times now, NDTV, CNN-IBN. Who have forgotten what journalism is.

  11. why cant media highlight the fact that the Crusader Susan used the words saffron underwear when referring to mutaliks group. why doesnt she send green bras to aasiya andrabis group in kashmir too? also , we should ask hindu groups to fund for DNA tests for the children of these " forward women " at least their husbands will know if the kids are really theirs or not. ---Commander in Chief , Sipah e Shivba

  12. Problem is most of the english media are the agents of the Crusaders or the Godless ones .We need a mainstream english channel that puts our side of the story forward too. Times of India should be renamed Times of Indonesia . ---- Commander in Chief , Sipah e Shivab

  13. The starters and followers of the pink condom campaign have to ask themselves just two questions:
    1) Why does the pink chaddi campaign bother you? Is it because you find if difficult to deal with the fact that woman can come out of their houses/kitchens and protest?
    2) Are you sexist MCPs? If you are honest, the answer to this will be an shameful YES.

Then, why this whole bloody pretense of hiding behind "Hindu Culture" and its "preservation" ? Admit that your egos are hurt and you think men are superior.

A little bit of introspection is necessary.

  15. some agents of the Crusaders are spreading a false assumption that egos of men are hurt hence this campaign. obviously he/she hasnt bothered to read the entire article that the creater of this blog ( may Rama be pleased with him ) has posted. for the benefit of such ignorant agents of the Crusaders , let me copy paste a few important lines : Let me make it clear once again – what SRS did in the Mangalore pub was not only uncivil and uncouth, it was criminal. If any campaign was needed, it was needed to bring those guys to book.
now the writer of this blog has made it clear that those who attacked the women in mangalore must be punished , so how does that make him sexist MCP ?
this pink condom campiagn is not against a bunch of skanks and hoes getting drunk in pubs , it is the result of insults to Hinduism by the Crusader Susan , who used the word saffron underwear in her description of mutaliks men. Jamaat e islami e hind has also opposed valentines day as has its students union. Will Crusader Susan send green underwear to their leaders too?
a little bit of introspection is necessary for hypocrites.

  21. Why is every one anonymous here ??? Perhaps the 'pink condom' campaign walas are scary of what their folks/friends might think of them when they get to know of their condom stunt.

'Pink condom' guys. Kindly come out in open. Trust me, its hard to trust that you are hiding yourself under the veil becoz u don't want publicity...perhaps the truth is you are not confident of yourself of coming out in public.

  22. It is safe to be anonymous, as anyone standing against the ruling party at the centre gets knocked down/crushed in an undemocratic manner. I am sure PinkCondom people do not have strong media connections or Minister backings like Chaddis!

  24. Since we are all anxious to ensure that no disrespect to Hindu religious symbols takes place, I'm sure you're glad to know that, as according to http://thepinkchaddicampaign.blogspot.com/2009/02/logo-show-go.html the logo that seems to have offended so many here is actually inspired by an ice-cream ad and a Photoshop tutorial. Readers are encouraged to verify this themselves.

Neither did the artist place pink underwear on the sacred Hindu sign OM and neither did we mock the OM.

Moreover, in your third post on this blog, you welcome our clarifications.

Since I am sure that all are agreed that defaming at religious symbol is a serious charge that no one would like to fling about in a frivolous manner, we would welcome it if the accusation that we desecrated the OM symbol be removed from your front page. As the images from the linked blog post show, no insult to Hinduism occurred or was meant.

A tribal woman in Nagpur was hit by Maharashtra Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Vadetivar.

During an interview in a camp in Chandarpur district, the minister got furious and threw a bundle of files at the woman. The woman immediately lost consciousness and was then admitted in a hospital where she still is.

Eyewitnesses say that the minister had an argument with the woman who is a district Congress leader.

No case has been registered against the minister and even the minister has denied the charges.

  29. Why don't you do something useful with the pink condom campaign and send condoms to the sex-phobic Pope? Oh, that's right, he and you probably agree in imposing moral policing and sexual repression on society, right?

And again, the background of the pink chaddi campaign logo is not some Hindu cultural property. Look for "vector sun" or "ray vector" on Google Images if you don't believe me.

  30. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/03/28/pope.condom.attacks/index.html

So, if Western activists can stand up to Christian orthodoxy, why can't Indian activists stand up to Hindu orthodoxy?

Really, it must take tremendous amounts of argumentational acrobatics to portray the pink chaddi campaign as a "pseudo-sickular" battle against Hinduism, as opposed to the libertarian battle against oppression by ANY religion that it actually is. People stand up to religious majoritarian tyranny all over the world; don't think Hinduism is something special in that regard.
